How to add a self-check quiz to every module in Canvas
Short answer: in Canvas, build each quiz in Quizzes with Quiz Type set to Practice Quiz, then add it to the module in Modules, once per module. Or open Course++ and type: “At the end of every module, add a 5-question ungraded self-check quiz on that module.”
The problem
I want a quick check at the end of every module.
Each one means a new quiz, a setting that keeps it ungraded, five questions, and a trip to Modules to put it in place. Do that for eight modules and it adds up.
one quiz per modulebuilt, ungraded, then placed
The fix
Ask once. Course++ does every module.
It reads each module, shows you a plan, and builds the quizzes once you approve. You review them before students see them.

Prompts you can copy
Open your Canvas course, open Course++ beside it, and paste one of these. Change the names and numbers to match your course.
At the end of every module, add a 5-question ungraded self-check quiz based on that module’s pages. Let students retake it.

To try one module first.Add a 3-question multiple-choice self-check to each module in Unit 2, ungraded, with feedback that explains each correct answer.

A quick check. It only reads; nothing changes.
How to add a self-check quiz to a module in Canvas by hand
- In Course Navigation, click Quizzes, then Add Quiz. If Canvas asks for a quiz engine, choose Classic Quizzes and click Submit.
- On the Details tab, name the quiz and set Quiz Type to Practice Quiz.
- Open the Questions tab, click New Question for each question, and click Save.
- In Course Navigation, click Modules.
- Click the + (add item) icon on the module. Choose Quiz from the drop-down, click your quiz’s name, then click Add Item.
- Repeat for every module.
Good to know
- Try one module first. A request this big takes longer and uses more of your credits. Check the first quiz, then ask for the rest.
- The questions come from each module’s pages. Review them. For more on the ungraded setting, see practice quizzes.
- Quizzes are created unpublished. You publish them when you are ready. Need a quiz from a single reading? See quiz from a reading.
Questions teachers ask
Can Canvas add a quiz to every module at once?
No. You build each quiz, then add it to its module one at a time. Course++ can build and place one in each module from a single request.
How do I make a module quiz that doesn’t count?
Set the quiz’s Quiz Type to Practice Quiz in Classic Quizzes. A practice quiz gives students a score but no grade.
Will the self-check quizzes show up in the Gradebook?
Not if they are classic practice quizzes. Canvas leaves those out of the Gradebook.
Will students see the quizzes right away?
No. Course++ creates them unpublished, so you can review the questions and publish when you are ready.
