How to build a unit from learning objectives in Canvas
Short answer: in Canvas, create the module under Modules → + Module, then make each page, assignment and quiz yourself and add it with the +. Canvas has no unit builder. Or open Course++ and type: “Build a unit called Linear Equations from these three objectives. Include an overview page, practice, and a quiz. [list objectives]”
The problem
You know what students should be able to do. Building the unit around it takes days.
Every piece is its own item: an overview, a reading, practice, a quiz. You create each one, name it, and then drop it into the module.
four kinds of item, one at a timeall the wiring by hand
The fix
Give it the objectives. Review the draft.
Course++ proposes the unit, then waits for your approval before it builds. Everything is created unpublished so you can edit it before students see it.
3 to 5 objectives ina full unit to review
Prompts you can copy
Open your Canvas course, open Course++ beside it, and paste one of these. Change the names and numbers to match your course.
Build a unit called Linear Equations from these objectives: 1) solve one- and two-step equations, 2) graph a line from an equation, 3) write an equation from a word problem. Include an overview page, a practice assignment, and a quiz. Leave it all unpublished.
The standard version.Build a two-week unit on the causes of the Civil War for US History from these objectives: [paste them]. Use primary-source readings with cited sources, include a graded discussion, and end with a short unit test.
When you want researched readings and a discussion.I attached a PDF of Chapter 6 from our textbook and last year’s Linear Equations handout. Build the unit from these objectives: [paste them]. Use the textbook’s worked examples on the overview page and base the practice assignment on the handout.
When you have material you trust and want the unit built on it.Add a 10-question practice quiz to the Linear Equations module, with questions on objective 2 only. Leave it unpublished.
Adding practice for one objective after the unit exists.Read the Linear Equations module and tell me which objectives on the overview page have no assignment or quiz covering them.
A read-only check that every objective gets practiced.
How to build a unit in Canvas by hand
- In Course Navigation, click Modules, then + Module. Name the unit and click Add Module.
- Click Pages (then View All Pages if a front page opens) and click + Page. Write the overview, list the objectives, and click Save.
- Make any reading pages the same way.
- Click Assignments → + Assignment for each practice task, then click Save.
- Create the quiz from Quizzes (classic or New Quizzes, depending on your school), add questions, and click Save.
- Back in Modules, click the + (Add Item) icon on the unit, pick each item from the Add menu, and click Add Item.
- Leave the unit unpublished until you have reviewed it.
Good to know
- The objectives come from you. Course++ writes them onto the overview page as you gave them. It does not invent standards.
- Review everything. Readings, questions and instructions are drafts. Check the content, especially the quiz answers, before you publish.
- Attach what you already use. Course++ reads PDFs and images up to 10 MB each, such as a textbook chapter or an old handout. It can’t read Word or PowerPoint files, so save those as a PDF first.
- Quizzes are classic by default. Say “New Quiz” by name if you want that kind. Course++ can’t undo changes to New Quizzes.
- Related. See weekly modules from an outline or self-check quizzes for each module.
Questions teachers ask
Can Canvas build a unit from learning objectives?
No. Canvas has no unit builder, so you create each page, assignment and quiz yourself and add it to a module. Course++ can draft the whole unit from objectives you type in.
How many learning objectives should I give?
Three to five works well. Fewer than that gives a thin unit, and more can make it hard to review.
Will students see the unit before I review it?
No. Everything Course++ builds is created unpublished until you publish it.
Can I use my own readings and activities?
Yes. Name them in your request, or attach a PDF of them, and Course++ will build them into the unit.
